Careers at The Shelf

Account Supervisor (and Magician)

The Supervisor of Account Management leads our team to excel in influencer marketing. This role requires expertise in managing campaigns, collaborating with agencies, and ensuring client satisfaction. Join us to shape the future of influencer marketing.

Overview of the Role

The Shelf is a full-service influencer marketing creative + strategy agency with our own proprietary SaaS platform. We use our in-house software to plan, execute, manage, and optimize our clientsā€™ campaigns from start to finish. This ā€œstart to finishā€ is where you come in, because youā€™ll be running our campaignsā€¦ and trust me when I say youā€™ll be leading the charge.

Itā€™s also worth noting right here that we have our hands full running campaigns, guys. So, we will only contact those candidates who are most likely to be a good fit for the role. Weā€™ll respond quickly when thatā€™s the case. But if you donā€™t hear from us, please donā€™t feel slighted. Rally on ā€“ thereā€™s a role out there thatā€™s probably a better fit for your awesome skillset.

As the Supervisor of Account Management… you’ll be at the helm of our talented account management team, guiding them to deliver exceptional results for our clients. You’ll oversee a team of influencer marketing experts who have already spent years mastering the intricacies of influencer marketing, collaborating with prominent brands, and overseeing campaigns with budgets exceeding $1 million. These are people who can implement battle-tested influencer strategies in their sleep. They see all and know all when it comes to influencer marketing. And what they don’t know, they’ll quickly learn.

In order to successfully perform this role, you’ll need to be a leader of leaders.Ā  You’ll need to be someone these experts can trust and follow. You represent their next level of achievement, the level of skill they want to attain. If it takes your team an average of an hour to do something, it takes you a few minutes.Ā

We place a high value on adaptability, accountability, and dependability. So, you must possess an intimate knowledge of the influencer marketing industry that enables you to pivot your team so that you can collaboratively adjust client campaigns in real time without anxiety. If you can do that, you’re pretty well-suited to thrive in our environment.

While this position offers remote flexibility, we maintain high standards of commitment and communication, akin to an office environment. #bestofbothworlds

As a vital member of our leadership team, your contributions will play a pivotal role in our continued success. If you’re known for your proactive approach, dedication to fostering a collaborative team environment, and unwavering commitment to client satisfaction, you’ll thrive in this role.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your career and lead a talented team to new heights, we encourage you to seize this opportunity. Submit your application today and demonstrate why you’re the ideal candidate to lead our account management team to unparalleled success.

About You

We are looking for someone who is equal measures kind yet firm, sassy yet smart, cool yet humble. We want someone who is serious about doing their job, yet doesnā€™t take themselves too seriously. If youā€™ve got an ego or an attitude, you honestly wonā€™t make it past the first interview. The Account Management team is really nice, collaborative, and helpful. We expect the same sort of kickass attitude from newcomers.

Hereā€™s a quick breakdown of what we want from you:

  • Youā€™ve expertly run end-to-end influencer campaigns for the last 5 – 7 years. šŸ™ŒšŸ½
  • You have previous large agency experience and understand #agencylife. That means you thrive in the fast-paced, ball-juggling šŸ¤¹šŸ½ā€ā™€ļønature of agencies, especially one thatā€™s a startup.
  • Youā€™ve managed client budgets šŸ’° upwards of $1M+ and understand the accountability and communication required for a Fortune 500 client.
  • You learn quickly. šŸ¤“ Every day can be different in the world of influencer marketing. We aim to adapt and mature with each change in the platforms, algorithms, or client project. Being flexible and willing to learn is crucial to success in this role.
  • You friggin’ šŸ’–šŸ’– a deadline šŸ“… and understand how to meet it. That includes working efficiently and thoroughly to get the job done.
  • You have a strong client presence. Influencers can be scary to some brands. Youā€™re the type of person who can use logic, data, and persuasion to create trust with your clients.
  • You value working on a team.Ā Ā  Our senior AMs are the quarterbacks of client campaigns. You know when to pull other departments in to answer a client question, solve a problem, or level up our offering. Youā€™re always striving to deliver beyond expectations on every single project. Then wake up the next day and do it again. ā±ļø
  • You lead by example.Ā  Ā  Ā You set the tone for your peers no matter the rough waters by approaching challenges or changes with creative problem-solving. You are solution-oriented and that drives you towards success.
  • You don’t shy away from feedback. Because being able to give feedback in the moment is so critical to our success as a team, you understand the value of feedback and you know how to deliver it in a way that instills motivation and boosts morale. Ā
  • Youā€™re a boots-on-the-ground kind of leader whoā€™s also mastered the 30,000-foot view.
  • Youā€™re objective and led by data (instinct, chops, unicorn dust – all acceptable reasons to make a move as long as the data supports your decision).

What You'll Be Up To

šŸ‘Øā€šŸ‘Øā€šŸ‘§ā€šŸ‘¦ Leading campaigns: Each Senior Account Manager leads at least one client across 4+ campaigns at any given point in time, depending on the complexity of the client & campaigns. Youā€™ll need to stay on top of the status of each of your campaigns, as well as keep your department head informed. At the start of a campaign, youā€™ll be working closely with your client to collect all remaining details needed to hammer out a formal campaign brief.

šŸ”Ž Influencer selection: Youā€™ll also be in charge of approving relevant influencers based on the campaign requirements AND your clientā€™s preferences. This includes managing Account Managers or the Talent Sourcing team who will initiate outreach ā€“ oftentimes en masse ā€“ and negotiations to gauge each influencerā€™s interest and availability to participate in the campaign. (It would be nice if you have some experience with outreach and/or negotiations, though not required.)

āœ… Client approvals: As the campaign progresses, there will be various rounds of client approvals, including their final influencer selections and post approvals. This will require you to be in constant communication with your team to guide influencers through the process.

šŸ“£ Official influencer liaison: Throughout the campaign, youā€™ll be working very closely with the influencers themselvesā€¦, building relationships, checking their content, answering questions, providing suggestions, helping them complete their deliverables, ensuring all requirements have been met, and validating that all tracking-related code is intact and correctly installed. Basically: you become an influencer wrangler.

šŸ“Š Reports: You will also be creating a report at the end of each campaign, which weā€™ll share over a presentation with our clients. This is where you need to put your data hat on. And then your presentation hat, too.

šŸŽ‰ Etc.: Thereā€™s really quite a bit more to the role. For candidates who progress through to the phone interview stage of the hiring process, thatā€™s when Iā€™ll walk you through the full scope of job duties.

We also make time weekly for workshops so that everyone can get up to speed on the various things to learn in the industry (and with our platform too). About The Shelf

  • Weā€™re a team of more than 80.
  • Weā€™re growing.
  • Weā€™re about as scattered as a team can beā€¦ East Coast, West Coast, the middle of the countryā€¦ a bunch of us are in Canada, 1 in Ukraine, 1 in Russiaā€¦ we like to keep our options open in terms of company retreat locations.
  • About half of us are really funny.
  • Weā€™re currently working with some pretty amazing brands: Famous Footwear, UMG, Zenni Optical, KISS, Lenox, Sam’s Club, ROAR Organic, NestlĆ©, Honest Co., and Hershey just to name a few.

Who to Send Your Application To

Weā€™re a pretty down-to-earth bunch, so if youā€™re interested in applying, instead of an elaborate cover letter, you can email me at careers@theshelf.com, and include bullet points with the info requested in the next sectionā€¦

What To Put In Your Email

  • The job you are applying for.
  • A link to your Linkedin profile.
  • What job site sent you our way.
  • Your location.
  • Your phone number.
  • A rundown on how experienced you are with the influencer marketing spaceā€¦ Have you worked with them? Have you done client work in the influencer space? Stuff like that.
  • A summary of why you feel like youā€™d be good for this role.
  • A note about your agency experience, if you have any (and why #agencylife is for you). Or, if you donā€™t have agency experience, why you thrive in this sort of fast-paced environment.
  • Please let me know what sort of salary you have in mind. Iā€™d hate to waste your time if youā€™re wanting a salary thatā€™s beyond the realm of possibility for us.
  • BONUS – Send a video clip with your application and share why youā€™re a good candidate and what makes you stand out for this role.

Tips on how to get your application noticed (assuming thatā€™s what youā€™re shooting for):

  • Applications that are submitted using a job site (instead of being emailed to the above email address) will not be considered.
  • Please don’t have typos. (#FunLittleTip: Install Grammarly. Itā€™s a game-changer.)
  • It would be great if you could try to sound cool. We write in a colloquial, one-with-the-people-while-still-being-basically-grammatically-correct style. And while this style of writing is not a requirement, keep in mind that we receive a decent number of applicants every day, and 90% of those applications are boring AF. The ones that have a fun ā€œvoiceā€ and quirky writing style immediately stand out. In a good way.
  • Lastly, put yourself in the shoes of the person in charge of interviewingā€¦ What do you think that person would want to hear? Talk about that stuff and leave off anything that isnā€™t super relevant.

The Characteristics of People at The Shelf

Generally speaking, a lot of you will probably find this job post in line with your skill set, and I bet a lot of you probably have the skills necessary to perform the requirements of this role. Butā€¦ the characteristics that define what itā€™s like to actually work with you are also very important to us. Think of these requirements more in terms of culture-fit requirements:

šŸ•ŗ Our company has a very fast-paced environment. It might feel disorganized from time to time because weā€™re also a small company. We need each employee to be the type of person who can go with the flow. Who can adjust quickly. Who is able to embrace chaos with open arms when it decides to waltz through the door.

šŸŽ Due to the aforementioned fast-paced environment, you should be the type of person who is able to execute quicklyā€¦ within time constraints. WHILE still maintaining quality. We donā€™t ask for the impossible. But what we donā€™t want to see are projects that are slapped together and riddled with issues when weā€™re in a time crunch. Instead, weā€™d like to see people make adjustments and figure out how to make it work. Weā€™re looking for resourceful people who approach projects with that thereā€™s-more-than-one-way-to-skin-a-cat attitude.

šŸ“ˆ Iā€™ve never interviewed anyone who has said that they have bad work ethicā€¦ but thereā€™s a big difference between people who show up and do what gets assigned to them, and those who take initiativeā€¦ Those people who take pride in their projects and who go above and beyond because they have that drive for personal achievement and growth. We donā€™t want to micro-manage. We want to work with self-motivated people who are neurotic about quality.

āœ… People who donā€™t proofread drive me nuts!

šŸ‘æ While I feel like I shouldn’t have to mention this, weā€™ve worked with people in the past who ran around like a bunch of crazed loose cannonsā€¦ yelling at coworkers, constantly complaining, deploying the cold-shoulder on a regular basisā€¦ passive aggressive. So if youā€™re not a nice personā€¦ that wonā€™t really work for us. We really need everyone to exude positivity.

šŸ‘‚ You need to be receptive to feedback. This is a quality that we find candidates have trouble self-assessing. But try hard, because we give feedback when needed. Weā€™re too small of a company to just let people do whatever they want to do. (Side-noteā€¦ no one loves feedback. Thatā€™s fine. I donā€™t either really. But will you take it nicely? Will you incorporate it? Are you going to be passive aggressive while doing it? Have you ever been told not to ā€œcut off your nose to spite your faceā€? These are questions you should ask yourself).

šŸ˜ŗ Influencer marketing is constantly changing, so we’re looking for people who are curious and eager to learn. Let’s say, for example, a client mentions in passing how they’re doing whitelisting on Instagram (and we’ll assume you don’t know what that means). Are you going to just nod your head and say you understand it when you don’t? Or, are you going to jot down a note, do some research, and become a whitelisting expert for the next client conversation? Because we need the latter.

šŸ‘©šŸ½ā€šŸ’» If youā€™re working remotely, you need to actually be working. No one likes a freeloader.

šŸ‘†šŸ¾ Are you ambitious? It’s not a requirement, but if you areā€¦ thereā€™s lots of room for career growth. Plus, we like to hire our managers from within the team, so there is a very clear path to the next level (if that’s of interest to you).

Inclusivity

Here at The Shelf, we truly believe it’s our differences that have allowed us to come together and form such a cohesive and all-encompassing whole. Our mission as a company is to help our clients stand out amongst the crowd… to be different and impactful. And since we’re a team made up of diverse people with all different backgrounds and experiences, we’re able to do this naturally. šŸ™‹šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ™‹šŸ™‹šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™‹šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ™‹šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™‹šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ™‹šŸ½ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™‹šŸ¾

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, status as a veteran, and basis of disability or any other federal, state or local protected class.

So Is This Your Job Jam?

I could honestly go on and on (because Iā€™m long-winded, in case you couldnā€™t tell that by now), but Iā€™m going to stop here. The point is, you gotta have the chops AND play well with others. And if youā€™re giddy already, feeling like this job description is just so dead-on-b*lls accurate for you, perfect! We canā€™t wait to hear from you.

If youā€™re lacking a skill or two but still feel pumped, feel free to mention it in your cover letter. Weā€™re a small company that’s big into personal growth and supporting up-and-coming go-getters!

It’s also worth noting right here that we have our hands full running campaigns, guys. So, we will only contact those candidates who are most likely to be a good fit for the role. We’ll respond quickly when that’s the case. But if you don’t hear from us, please don’t feel slighted. Rally on – there’s a role out there that’s probably a better fit for your awesome skillset.

Oh, and one last thingā€¦ Please add the word Toggle to your subject line when applying so that I know that you read this entire post.
